Viral Disinformation about Iran Shared by Everyone and Their Mother

Even mainstream media calls out this obvious propaganda spread by influencers, celebrities, and the Canadian PM

Anyone on social media in the last week or two probably came across this disinformation about Iran planning to execute 15,000 protesters. The post was shared by countless social media influencers, celebrities like Viola Davis, and even freaking politicians like Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US House Member Ted Lieu.

The craziest part for me is how easily people believe rubbish like this when it comes to ‘Evil Enemy Regime X.’

I initially saw the now-viral post when my sister sent me a screenshot of an influencer who shared it late on Sunday the 13th. She often asks me about politics, wanted to get my take on the story, and asked if I thought it was true.

I’m not going to lie, I’m quite proud of my response.

It was my first time seeing the claim, but I immediately thought it was very obviously false. It was late and I didn’t have time to further research the accusation. So, in a voice message response, I said I hadn’t seen any evidence but assumed it was fake, that maybe somewhere near that number had been arrested during the protests…
