Time will tell. I like economist Robert Gordon’s book The Rise and Fall of American Growth and his ‘special century’ concept, referring to 1870–1970. We made tech advances, germ theory, indoor plumbing, etc, that allowed people to live and work longer which also contributed greatly to the boost in economic development during that period. Part of that could be attributed to capitalism, part to the state, and part to the natural evolution of technology and knowledge. The distribution of those gains and the fact that many people benefitted falls squarely on progressive labor movements.

But yeah, the paper is narrow in its analysis of extreme poverty and capitalism.

Thanks for the read and the words, Scott.
