I'm not familiar with South Africa specifically, but most of these nations don't have sovereignty over their land and natural resources--usually multi-national corporations or domestic companies linked to foreign investors do--and then they are victims of Wester-backed coups when they try to be truly independent.

Look at the history of almost any South American or African country and it is a similar story. Those right-wing dictators who took out huge IMF loans didn't emerge from anywhere.
