Great question, Michelle. It has definitely changed my perspective on just about everything and European friends and media have probably heavily influenced that.

These days, however, it is hard for me to read most mainstream European press and not see that it comes from almost the same perspective. It’s not as jingoistic but, in terms of foreign policy, still can be myopic and misleading in many ways.

That being said, it definitely helps to be outside looking in and to be surrounded by people doing the same. And I try my best to do that within my own head — and often fail — to double-check that I’m not carrying a huge suitcase of biases.
